Where are Meg Whitman’s Spending Cuts? Sep 22nd

by Tom Campbell // Comments

On May 18, at the height of the budget negotiations, I put forward a specific plan, line by line, identifying over $15.4 billion in how to cut state spending. Shortly thereafter, when the budget crisis got worse, I identified an additional $2 billion in cuts. So I’ve put forth specifics on saving the state $17.4 billion annually.

Today, it is disappointing that more than four months later, and after a budget deal has been reached, Meg Whitman has still not announced specific spending cuts, except her proposal to fire state employees, which would save only a small fraction of what’s needed to close the budget gap.

Here’s what she said today, in her own words:

“As I committed to in February, if elected I will identify and implement at least $15 billion in permanent spending cuts from the state budget.”

So I reiterate, she says she will identify spending cuts, if she’s elected. To decide whether to elect her or not, we have no detail at all beyond that she’ll fire state employees.

Meg Whitman has had more than two months since the Governor and the Legislature agreed to a budget deal that specified about $12 billion in real spending cuts. At the very least, she might have gone through that list, agreeing or disagreeing. Instead, voters are left with just a promise that she will find $15 billion, one way or another.

If this sounds familiar to voters, that’s because it’s reminiscent of President Obama promising to find $900 billion in ‘waste, fraud, and abuse’ to pay for his new health care plan. Californians have learned not to trust those who claim, ‘Elect me, and then we’ll find the money.’ We shouldn’t accept that from President Obama; and we shouldn’t accept that from our candidates for Governor.

I want as many of Meg Whitman's supporters as possible to see this:

Tom - I really don't think she has a a chance. All we need is one debate and it will become a contest between you and Poizner for the GOP nomination. I'm extremely skeptical of even you but, so far, I think you will do the least amount of damage and your plans for handling our immigration issue is very very logical.

I've been an Ebay member for @ 9 yrs, Whitman ignored well known problems for years and her staff was like the gang that couldn't shoot straight. She was in the right place at the right time, but Ebayers made it a success. We own a construction business in NC and what happens in CA affects the whole country. Not her!!! (I have 100% positive feedback on Ebay, mostly a buyer of small items, what I'm saying here is no secret.)

No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth!

    Hi Tom,
Since I was at the APAPA meeting at the Convention Center I was able to compare Ms. Whitman to you and Mr. Poisner. My impression was she is a great motivational speaker but not a good teacher. I was impressed by her style, but I learned nothing of substance, However, I was left with the knowledge of her intention of firing 44,000 state workers, but not who or how. My first thought was she would be firing teachers, which is like killing the goose laying golden eggs.. My guess she is not going to get the state worker vote with that strategy. Her idea to bring jobs back might just be selling ones remaining possessions on Ebay to other destitute people selling their possessions on Ebay. Good business for Ebay but not good business for the citizens of the state.

Dear Mr. Campbell: I am a Democrat and a supporter of our President and his ideas and policies. I firmly believe that he is the best hope for our country. In addition, I have reviewed all the candidates for Governor of our state and do feel strongly that you are the best choice to govern our state and have been sharing my views with everyone. I do wish we had open primaries. In my opinion though, I do wish that you would not focus on anti-Obama rhetoric, and instead focus on the postives that you will bring to our state and thereby gather the support of all parties as there is a deep need for all of us to be working together in this desperate situation and save our wonderful, beautiful state.
    Sincerely,
    Leslie Rourke

I'm an Obama supporter too, but Campbell is right that Obama did not identify how he could to save that much money from Medicare fraud, which I am a bit disappointed in Obama for.
  • Leaving aside the issue of Obama's healthcare plan (he has identified his cuts specifically, though it is a fair question whether they would actually make it into law, and BTW it's not $900 billion) ... hey, Meg Whitman just isn't a serious candidate for the job of California governor. A candidate this unqualified wouldn't get a first look (let alone a second) in the private sector. If the Republican Party can't see that and want to get shellacked in the general by nominating someone who has rarely voted in her adult life, well then ...

... it would be like hiring a bank president who consistently overdrew her checking account ... or never even had a checking account.
  • Meg Whitman underqualified to be Governor of California. Her claim to fame is that she was CEO of eBay. So what? I don't see how her eBay experience translates into running California. She has no government experience.

Tom Campbell is a much better candidate than Meg Whitman and deserves to win the Republican nomination for Governor.
